Homesteading Basics

April 25- 29, 2011 $895 per person (We have merged this workshop with Intro to Farming)

Get started with growing and processing your own garden and raising small livestock with this workshop designed to give you hands on experience and the confidence to grow your own food and how to manage poultry and goats.

We decided to offer this class in response to many of our friends who are looking for basic skills in food security or self sufficiency. The month of April on our farm is truly a new beginning each year, greenhouse starts and transplants,  garden set up and early plantings of spring crops. Milk production is well underway although there is always the possibility of late arriving kid.  Of course you will have a chance to milk a goat and learn to make four types of cheese. The Chickens and ducks are laying eggs and a new purchase of birds for meat or replacement layers have arrived.  Our local beekeeper will be here to get you energized about honeybees and their importance in the food chain, a sweet story indeed. And skills to get you started on other homestead projects such as how to frame a wall or the right type of fencing. This class is early enough to send you home with the skills and plenty of time to get your own garden planted and make your homestead flourish.

Amy Pennington, Seattle’s Go Go Green Gardener, will share her experiences with urban gardens and the Urban Garden Share project. Also, we will be priveledged to see her soon to be released book Urban Pantry: Tips and Recipes for a Thrifty, Sustainable and Seasonal Kitchen
